Virgil L. Menzie


ULYSSES Q Virgil L. Menzie, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006, at Western Prairie Care Home, Ulysses, after a lengthy illness.

He was born March 4, 1920, on a farm near Copeland, the son of John Upton and Luella Belle Menzie. He married his childhood sweetheart Geraldine (Jerry) Parks on Aug. 14, 1943 in Wichita. She preceded him in death.

He grew up in Montezuma graduating from high school in 1938. He went on to attend Dodge City Community College and Kansas State University.

He served in the Philippines during World War II as a member of the Army Air corps. He was a life member of the VFW, a 50 year Master Mason, a long time member and past president of the Ulysses Rotary Club and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ulysses.

In addition to being a certified FAA airplane mechanic, he had a life long interest in farming. He was an employee of Beech Aircraft, owned his own John Deere Agency in Cimarron and finished his career as an automotive service manager, first at Anderson Motors than at Riley Chevrolet in Ulysses.

After he retired, he was actively involved with the Grant County Senior Center and served as Grant County’s representative to the Silver Haired Legislature.

He is survived by his two children, Jill Clinesmith and Jeff Menzie, both of Ulysses, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Kenneth, Warren and Leonard and his only sister, Velda Monninger.

Services will take place at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses on Wednesday with the Rev. Dennis Livingston presiding. Burial at the Fairview Cemetery in Montezuma will take place at 3:30 p.m.

Friends may call today and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses.
